When Sam was 20 weeks pregnant she was attending a check-up at her doctors when they told her that something was wrong with Rae. They explained that Rae was being diagnosed with a congenital heart disease. She was diagnosed with a complete AV Canal defect. That meant that she had two holes in her heart that caused blood to combine and mix and send lots of fluid to her lungs. It wasn't affecting Rae while she was in Sam's belly but once she was born it would cause her lots of complications. Throughout Sam's pregnancy she attended many appointments with a genetic specialist and a pediatric cardiologist to monitor Rae's heart and make sure she was growing how she should.
Rae was then born on June 4th, 2018. In order to monitor Rae she had to be in the NICU for a while to monitor her heart and help her body temperature regulate. Once she went home however she had many symptoms that many other babies did not. She gets overly tired when trying to feed or do any kind of movement since her heart has to work twice as hard as a normal babies heart does. She also is prone to getting sick very easily so she has to be very careful when leaving the house. She has been back in the hospital multiple times due to many different issues that she has occurred along the way. She also is on a few medications that help keep her lungs clear of excess fluid and keep her blood pressure low.
Due to her defect she also has to attend regular visits to her cardiologist who has been monitoring her since she was 22 weeks in Sam's belly. He wanted to wait as long as possible to do the surgery so that she could grow and be strong and at least 12 pounds. Then at the begging of October we started to see symptoms from her body that were telling us that it was time. She was vomiting her food more frequently. She was eating way less than normal. She was also sleeping a ton. So we spoke with her cardiologist and he sent all of their research and paperwork to the surgical team so that they could talk about her case and plan a surgery date.
With that being said we have a date. The surgery is scheduled for Monday October 29th, 2018 at 7:30am. They will have to bypass her heart in order to perform the surgery. From what the doctors have told us they said the surgery could last anywhere from 4-6 hours. She will then be in the ICU for about a week for her recovery period. We ask that we do not get any visitors while she is in the hospital due to the risk of her contracting an infection. A little while after she is home and stable we will let everyone know and whoever would like to come visit her can let us know so we can plan a time. She will be intensely recovering from the surgery for about six weeks and then taking it easy from there. Also we ask that instead of sending gifts please just donate money here. We will use whatever money we receive to help pay the many medical bills that we have incurred these past months for all of the doctor visits that we had.

Cuando Sam tenía 20 semanas de embarazo, fuimos a un chequeo en donde los médicos le dijeron que algo estaba mal con Rae. Explicaron que a Rae le estaban diagnosticando una enfermedad cardíaca congénita. Ella fue diagnosticada con un defecto completo del canal atrio ventricular. Eso significaba que tenía dos agujeros en su corazón que hacían que la sangre se combinara, se mezclara y enviara mucho líquido a sus pulmones. No afectó a Rae mientras estaba en el vientre de Sam, pero una vez que nació, le causaría muchas complicaciones. A lo largo del embarazo de Sam, asistió a muchas citas con un especialista en genética y un pediatra cardiólogo para monitorear el corazón de Rae y asegurarse de que estaba creciendo como debía.
Rae nació el 4 de junio de 2018. Para poder monitorear a Rae, tuvo que estar en la cuidados intensivos durante un tiempo para controlar su corazón y ayudar a regular la temperatura de su cuerpo. Sin embargo, una vez que se fue a la casa, tuvo muchos síntomas que muchos otros bebés no tuvieron. Ella se cansa demasiado cuando trata de alimentarse o hacer cualquier tipo de movimiento, ya que su corazón tiene que trabajar el doble de duro que el corazón de una bebé normal. También es propensa a enfermarse con mucha facilidad, por lo que debe tener mucho cuidado al salir de la casa. Ella ha regresado al hospital varias veces debido a muchos problemas diferentes que han ocurrido en el camino. También toma algunos medicamentos que ayudan a mantener sus pulmones alejados del exceso de líquido y mantienen baja su presión arterial.
Debido a su defecto, también tiene que asistir a visitas periódicas a su cardiólogo, quien la ha estado monitoreando desde que tenía 22 semanas en el vientre de Sam. El doctor queria esperar el mayor tiempo posible para realizar la cirugía para que ella pueda crecer y ser fuerte y tener al menos 12 libras. Luego, a principios de octubre, comenzamos a ver los síntomas de su cuerpo que nos decían que ya era hora. Ella estaba vomitando su comida con más frecuencia. Estaba comiendo mucho menos de lo normal. Ella también estaba durmiendo bastante. Después de hablar con su cardiólogo, envió toda su investigación y documentos al equipo quirúrgico para que pudieran hablar sobre su caso y planificar una fecha de cirugía.
Con eso se dice que tenemos una cita. La cirugía está programada para el lunes 29 de octubre de 2018 a las 7:30 am. Tendrán que pasar por alto su corazón para realizar la cirugía. Por lo que los médicos nos han dicho, dijeron que la cirugía podría durar entre 4 y 6 horas. Luego estará en la UCI durante aproximadamente una semana durante su período de recuperación. Pedimos que no recibamos visitas mientras ella está en el hospital debido al riesgo de que contraiga una infección. Poco después de que ella esté en casa y este estable, haremos saber a todos y quien quiera visitarla puede hacérnoslo saber para que podamos planificar. Usaremos el dinero que recibamos para ayudar a pagar las muchas facturas médicas en las que hemos incurrido estos últimos meses para todas las visitas al médico que tuvimos.
