Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

Paul’s journey began almost 15 years ago when he had a major heart attack.  Through hard work, good medical care, and lots of prayers he was able overcome that challenge and live a relatively normal life.

About a year and a half ago, Paul began experiencing shortness of breath.  It continued to worsen and he was diagnosed with idiopathic interstitial lung disease.  That is a fancy way of saying he has a lung disease that is impairing his ability to get enough oxygen into his body, but they do not know what is causing it.

After many tests and increasing oxygen needs, it was determined that his best hope is to have a heart lung transplant.  The University of Iowa does lung transplants and heart transplants, but they are not certified to do heart lung transplants.  The doctors reached out to their colleagues to see who might evaluate Paul for a transplant.  That is how we ended up at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
