Three and a half years ago, Paul began feeling short of breath, a heaviness when breathing, and a general sense of weakness. It took about half a year before he was diagnosed with Myelodysplastic Syndrome, a rare cancer of the bone marrow. His disease was controlled for several years with a drug called Revlamid. However, over time it became ineffective and his cancer continued to progress. Over the last three months he has become blood transfusion dependent and it became clear that he had hit an ideal spot for a stem cell transplant.
