In the early morning hours of Monday August 7th, my Mom (Pat Schirmers ) had a severe stroke. Thankfully because of early identification and early intervention, the emergency neurological team at Methodist hospital was able to remove the clot that was causing the stroke because Pat was not a candidate for the clot busting drugs used for most stroke patients. Pat's initial symptoms were complete paralysis in the R arm and R leg as well as well as the loss of language.
After 6 days inpatient at Methodist Hospital, Pat was discharged on Saturday August 12th to Transitional Care in a Skilled Nursing Facility for 2-3 weeks for intensive rehabilitation to include Speech Therapy, Physical Therapy and Occupational therapy to help with regaining her speech, and use of her R arm and R leg.
After her transitional care stay, my Dad (Doug Schirmers) is planning to get them set up in a local senior housing community with available assisted living.
Pat tires very easily and is frustrated that she cannot communicate like normal. (oh how she loves to talk normally!) Pat seems to be aware of what has happened and what is going on but does have foggy times and is forgetful.
My Dad has been by her side practically all day every day and is holding on tight to what he knows my Mom would want which is ultimately to be able to continue to "winter" in AZ.
Please keep Pat and Doug in your prayers as they go through this transition. We believe in the power of prayer and we believe in miracles. We are praying for a miraculous and complete restoration of all that was damaged by the stroke.
If you are so inclined, I have establised a GoFundMe page to help with the hospital and ongoing living expenses as Medicare will not cover everything.
