On the afternoon of Sunday, 5/16/21, Pastor Reid Nelson, was spending some time in preparation for the evening service at Mackinaw City Bible Church. While sitting at the kitchen table around 2:30 pm he began to feel sick and experienced chest pains. He checked his blood pressure and found it was 197/112. Medication failed to bring it down or ease the symptoms so he called 911 and requested an ambulance. He then sat on the front steps and waited for the ambulance. He was taken by ambulance to McLaren Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey, MI where was admitted into the cardiac unit in an exhausted but stable condition. Tests revealed he'd suffered a heart attack.


Further testing on Monday and Tuesday revealed 3-4 arteries with 70%-90% occlusion (blockage) or stenosis (narrowing). The doctor recommended open heart surgery and it was scheduled for 6:00 am on Thursday, 5/21/21.
