Oscar Leon Oscar’s BMT Story

First post: Apr 25, 2022 Latest post: Feb 4, 2024
I am Oscar an eight-year-old, skateboarding, music loving, cheeky and curious boy. I am half English and half Austrian but live in London with my Mami, Papa, my sister Maxima and my dog Pretzel.

I was diagnosed with Diamond Blackfan Anaemia when I was about 14 months old. DBA is an extremely rare blood condition where my bone marrow fails to work properly. Day-to-day you wouldn’t notice much impact, but so far I receive a blood transfusion every three weeks at St Mary’s hospital along with other pricks, prodding and frequent treatments and procedures.

In December 2021 my parents were told that I need a Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) as my anti-iron medication started to damage my liver.

And so here we are, my BMT is scheduled to begin on 11 May 2022.

I already want to thank my doctors and nurses, my donor who is male, in his 20ies, and German (hope one day to meet you and thank you myself), my parents, sister, grandparents, relatives, teachers, and all my close friends who will support me along the way.

My parents and I will post regularly to keep you up to speed on how I am doing especially while I am in hospital for a couple of months.

Watch this space and see you soon,

Yours Oscar
