Norah is having surgery Monday, Nov 21. Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.
Norah began having back pain in January. There was no specific injury and it was initially attributed to a recent growth spurt and competitive cheer. When it did not improve, we began a long journey to find a diagnosis. Oddly enough, Norah is missing part of her vertebral body (the inferior facet) that articulates with the vertebral body below. It is very unusual, not a medical condition that you can find on Google. The instability causes her to have low back pain.
She has been off activity since July and is missing cheer, golf and swimming. Her condition did not improve with rest and physical therapy. Norah is scheduled to undergo a spinal fusion which should provide stability and improve her pain. Dr. Burton, a pediatric orthopedic specialist, will be performing her surgery at KU Medical Center.
Norah will be in the hospital for 4 to 5 days. Yes, we will be in the hospital over Thanksgiving. Her recovery will include being out of school for 6 weeks and off activity for 3 to 6 months. She is also hoping for no chores for a year! We plan to read lots of books, watch Hallmark Christmas videos and expose Norah to all the great movies from the 80's.
Your prayers and thoughts will be greatly appreciated. We will keep you posted here!
