On October 20, 2022 Nora was diagnosed with influenza(flu). Although her symptoms initially were mild (cough and fever), she became increasingly sick on Saturday, Oct 22, 2022. She was taken to Liberty Children's ER where she was evaluated, stabilized and transferred to Cincinnati Childrens Hospital. The quick transfer was a blessing, as her condition quickly became critical. She was transferred to Cardiac ICU and received life saving treatment (Ventilator, ECMO and medications for BP/comfort/infection treatment). On Sunday, Oct 23, 2022 she began having additional complications from her illness requiring surgery to remove fluid around the heart and to form an opening between chambers in her upper heart to optimize circulation. Later that day, it was discovered that significant blood clots were forming in the lower chambers of her heart caused by the effects of flu virus on her heart muscle (swelling and inability of her heart to pump). Medication was used in attempt to decrease the clots, but was unsuccessful. Monday, Oct 24th, Nora was prepped to receive an LVAD device to surgically remove the clots and insert a device to assist the pumping of her heart. Under the capable care of the surgical team, it was found that the lower chambers of Nora's heart had endured extensive irreversible damage.  LVAD was no longer an option and the plan shifted to heart replacement.
On Tuesday, Oct 25, 2022 Nora began a new journey toward a new heart. She will be receiving an artificial heart today, which will be a "bridge" to heart transplant. The journey will be extensive, requiring Nora to stay at Cincinnati Childrens until she is ready for heart transplant. It is anticipated she will be in the ICU for 2 weeks, slowly needing less medical support. She will transfer to a Step Down unit while recovering for an additional 2 months, receiving physical rehabilitation, nutrition and preparation to ensure she is in "top shape" for transplant. As her body heals, she will become eligible to receive a heart transplant and be placed on the transplant list.  During the wait list period (until transplant), she will remain at Cincinnati Childrens.  She will need all her friends and family to support and prayers as she progresses in her health and living the beautiful life she is meant to live.
