Welcome to our CaringBridge site. We've created it to keep friends and family updated. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement during this time when it matters most.  As some of you may know, my father Nick DeMatties, was diagnosed with esophageal cancer on May 4, 2016.  The cancer is called adenocarcinoma of the esophagus and gastroesophageal (GE) junction (which is the top part of the stomach where the esophagus and stomach meet).  This type of cancer affects men three times as often as it affects women.  It often has no symptoms until it has progressed to the late stages of disease.  Fortunately we have caught the cancer before it has spread to other organs (metastatic disease), however this will be a long and arduous fight.  We expect treatment (chemotherapy and radiation) to last approximately 6 weeks, followed by a period of rest and recovery lasting 6 weeks, and then finishing up with surgery.  Recovery after surgery could be as long as 6 months.  We are starting this site as a way to keep everyone informed of Nick's journey and treatment progress.  We sincerely appreciate the support of all of our friends and family during this time, and we embrace the love, hope, and encouragement you all have to offer us.
