Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate prayers for all involved.
Nick's story actually starts in December 2010 when he collapsed playing basketball. He was diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy. In June 2012 he had a left ventricular assist device implanted and then in October 2012 received a heart transplant. Nick has been doing well since.
Last Tuesday, 3/2 Nick was having continued abdominal pain for a few days and it got so painful he went to the ER. A CT scan revealed some spots along his spleen and a couple more in the abdominal area. He was admitted and on Thursday 3/4 a biopsy was done. Results came back on Saturday for Burkitt lymphoma, a very aggressive type of cancer related to the immunosuppressants for his transplant. He had a PET scan done Wednesday, 3/10 which revealed spots also in liver and bones. Thursday he received infusion of steroids and Friday received Rituxan. He is starting chemotherapy today. He will be hospitalized for about 5 days with each round of chemo and the plan is to have 6 rounds, with 3 weeks between each. Rachel can be with him during the day. I possibly can be with him if she can't but otherwise no visitors. He is at the University of Mn.
