Nathan Adams (age 8) started experiencing pain in his right leg in early October. An avid gymnast, we all thought he had pulled a muscle or sprained something. His pain escalated quickly so Brad and Amanda got him to an Orthopedist right away. An initial X-ray confirmed a large mass in his femur. He was immediately scheduled with a Pediatric Oncologist the next morning who suspected the mass to be a tumor consistent with Osteosarcoma.
On Oct. 27th, Nathan had surgery to biopsy the tumor and implant a port into his chest for future chemo treatments. The surgery was successful and confirmed the tumor was malignant. He was a stud and never showed any signs of fear. He picked grape flavored anesthesia.
His initial treatment plan will consist of 12 weeks of aggressive chemo to shrink/contain the tumor followed by surgery to remove the tumor and evaluate the femur. Following the surgery chemotherapy will require Nathan to be in the hospital for 5 days and then he’ll be home recovering for 7 days; then the cycle repeats. Chemo will be for 6-9 months. During this time his immune system will be compromised and he’ll need to be isolated more than normal.
Life is going to be hard for a while. Cancer is hard on families. Cancer is hard on marriages. However, we have the Lord as our front and rear guard. None of this surprised Him.
