Welcome to Natalie's Journey! This site was created for the purpose of sharing details of my mother's journey during her battle against cancer.
As some of you may know, my mother has been battling cancer for many many years. Recently, her doctor's noticed a new form of cancer appearing in her body known as Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS). MDS is a form of cancer that affects the production of healthy Red Blood Cells, White Blood Cells and Platelets. Due to the advanced stage of this disease, doctor's have determined that my mother will require a bone marrow transplant. Like organ transplants, this is a lengthy and risky procedure as it takes the right donor match along with time for the body to accept the donation. If successful, mom will be living at the Hope Lodge, under 24/7 care for the next several months.
We are so blessed to be supported by great family and friends who are all asking how they can help; and at this time, we are in desperate need of your prayers. Bone marrow donation is more complex than blood or other organ donations as matches are based on DNA. As for all who have asked, there is a website, bethematch.org, where you can read up and apply to donate. Please know that you will not be mom's donor due to timing, expenses and DNA differences. To put this in a mathematical perspective, all of our friends will be less than one percent of one percent likely to be her donor because they are not a blood relative. I have the highest chance, statistically, of being her match. As her son, I have a 50% chance of being her donor and if I am a match, I will be donating. If I am not her donor, we will go to the national bone marrow bank with hope of finding a suitable donor in the donor pool.
As you may have gathered, mom has a long and tough road ahead of her. We are always amazed by her strength and resolve to face all of the challenges she has faced thus far. Now we are asking for you all to join us in prayer for her journey. I will frequently update this site with news so everyone can keep informed. Please feel free to comment on or share this page with your family and friends.
