Nancy Wamsley

On April 23, Nancy Wamsley collapsed at home in a manner that seemed like a stroke to her husband Dallas. 911 was called and it turned out that it was a stroke. That initial episode was followed by another one while at KUMC ICU. These episodes were treated in a timely manner preventing any brain damage. However, on further investigations it turned out that Nancy had an even bigger medical problem. The clots in her system triggering the stroke were a rare effect of the dreaded Ovarian Cancer found through CT scans, blood work and a biopsy.  At that point, the tumor was 19 cm in diameter. It has continued to grow aggressively and while it is not officially staged, all medical indications point to it being in an advanced stage and not treatable. And without treatment Nancy was told that she has just six months to live.

Nancy was able to get a second opinion at St Luke’s. This doctor there is willing to give chemotherapy a shot. He has planned a two drug low dose chemotherapy regimen. Presently, they do not know if Nancy is physically able to handle this chemotherapy and so it will be evaluated on a week by week basis. The risk is that this treatment may even shorten whatever time she has left. But if it does work, it could buy her some more time. Nancy is willing to take this risk because she does not want to go down without a fight.

Her husband, Dallas is legally blind and cannot drive. He has to rely on others to help with doctor appointments, etc. So these next few months are going to be a roller coaster of appointments and good days and not so good days. The family is counting on friends to bang on heaven’s doors for a miracle and also being Christ’s hands and feet here on earth. There are many ways to pitch in. Like we say in the AMC community, many hands make light work and a great community 😊.

Dallas and Nancy just celebrated 17 years of marriage and they have been a source of joy to many over the decades. If you are willing and able to join forces to help them navigate this challenging and emotionally draining time do let us know by emailing or signing up for the listed care tasks.

The family needs help in the following areas:

 1. Transportation to and from doctor appointments

Please check the Planner for upcoming appointments. You may sign up to cover those appointments.

 2. Visit with Nancy and Dallas

Bring them some encouragement from God’s Word and pray.

 3. Watch Nancy for a couple hours while Dallas does errands

 4. Care for her for a few hours

Come September, Nancy may need more care during the day. More details will be posted as the need becomes clearer.
