Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.  On Friday, October 22nd, Myriam was found unresponsive in her garage by her neighbor Caroline.  She acted swiftly calling 911 and got Myriam to Kennestone Hospital in Marietta, which has an amazing neuro department partnered with Mayo Clinic.  The doctors and nurses have been wonderful and we are all very impressed with the Wellstar system so far.

Her son, Mike and Lara, Alex and Morgan were with her in the ER and Ericka, James, J. Russel and Sofia drove all night from Sarasota arriving early Saturday morning.  We are so very hopeful at this point and the news to date is as follows:

She had a brain bleed on the left side and the cause is still unknown.  Several CT scans have shown that the bleeding has stopped.  EEG results show decreased brain activity on the left side (to be expected per neurologist) but NO seizures, which is really good!  Her responsiveness improved throughout the day.  We met with the doctor around 1pm and she said she was really impressed with how well she was doing so soon after the stroke.  Yesterday, she could barely open her eyes, by late afternoon today she was much more alert, could follow commands and would even smile/laugh at appropriate times.  We spoke with the doctor again late afternoon and speech therapy, occupational/physical therapy had all been in to see her.  We hope she will be able to begin a modified diet tomorrow.  We have told her about every one one of you and all of your prayers, calls, texts.  We are all continuing to say our prayers and are so very grateful for all of your prayers and well wishes.

Next steps:

More CT scans will be performed to assess the rest of her body to rule out any other systemic cause for the stroke. She will have a cranial angiogram on Monday to try to determine the cause of the bleed and possibly "fix" anything that might be found.  As you all know, she is a fighter and a tough, tough lady and we are all confident she is going to beat this! Keep your prayers coming and we will continue to update you as things progress.

With love and hope,

The Smiths and the McGaritys
