Mindy Wilkins Mindy’s Chicago Chronicle

Welcome to our CaringBridge website.  We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place.

Mindy suffered an ischemic stroke while vacationing in Jamaica.  It caused extensive damage to the right side of her brain resulting in significant left side paralysis.  Researchers believe that undamaged areas of the brain can be trained to control motor functions that once resided in the damaged areas through a process called neuro-plasticity.   It takes great effort and thousands of repetitions.   Mindy has already regained movement in her left leg through daily gym sessions and she is  working hard to  regain movement in her left hand.

Neurological rehab is a very specialized discipline and there aren't many places that specialize in this unique rehab.  Fortunately, we recently discovered the Shirley Ryan Ability Lab in Chicago.  They have been consistently ranked #1 in the world by US News and World Report.    With the support of friends and management at Fedex, I am taking a leave of absence from work and we are temporarily relocating to Chicago on April 1st so that Mindy can participate in an intensive neuro-rehab program for the next few months.  We have rented a furnished apartment in downtown Chicago and will be living there  while Mindy attends rehab each day.  I will be posting  photos, videos and other information about our journey for those who might be interested.   This will be a long, arduous regimen.  She is excited but a little apprehensive.   So, if you feel inclined to leave her a note of encouragement and support, I know that she will appreciate it.

Thank you for visiting our site.  We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement.
