Mike Zimmerman

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We've created it to keep friends and family updated about Mike! 

After a rogue  attack by a radiator while in Italy (see photos), Mike saw his primary physician back in FL as he had a lot of back pain.  Hot spots were found on ribs and spine and after a multitude of testing, Mike was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma November 2017 (same as Tom Brokaw).  For the last few weeks, Mike's back pain has grown increasingly worse and another appointment was made for a follow up MRI to see what was causing the pain and unsteadiness. The earliest we could get in for the MRI was weeks out, the day after the Oncologist appointment at 10PM to be exact. 

On Tuesday, November 28th, we had our first visit with the Oncologist at Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, FL  to discuss a treatment plan.  Mike was in a lot of pain so the Oncologist admitted him and ordered some tests to be done on site. The MRI revealed a crushed T8 vertebrae and our "routine" doctor visit turned into a 5 hour emergency surgery to repair the damage and insert a rod and screws.   Mike had a plasma tumor that had destroyed the bone and was pressing on his spinal  nerve.  Had Mike not had that back surgery, he would most likely have been a paraplegic within 30 days.
