We found out Mike had idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis on December 1 after he was experiencing joint pain and shortness of breath for about a week. We thought he had COVID but all the tests were negative. The disease progressed very rapidly and on December 18 we went to UofM emergency knowing that something was very wrong. Given his quick decline, the team at UofM felt lung transplant was our only viable option. Mike was listed on December 23 and we were told on December 25 there was a donor match.
Mike’s transplant surgery took place late in the evening of December 26 into the morning of December 27.
