In September of 2017 I was diagnosed with stage 3 colorectal cancer. At that time there was involvement of lymph nodes in my pelvis and lower colon. I had chemotherapy, followed by radiation therapy with chemotherapy, followed by surgery in March of 2018. I had an abdominal-perineal resection with permanent colostomy placed. I had chemotherapy following the surgery and had no evidence of cancer in a follow up scan in June of 2018. Rising CEA levels in November were a concern, but CT scan still looked good. CEA levels were higher in late December resulting in more scans which showed involved lymph nodes in my mediastinum (chest). A PET CT in early January identified what appears to be involvement in my L4 and L5 vertebral bodies of my spine. Biopsies of both the lymph nodes in my chest and my spine have proven that this is metastatic cancer in those areas.
I started back on chemotherapy this past week. I'll do several cycles of chemo and then will rescan to check for response. I will be visiting with radiation oncology about the options for radiation therapy to the spine if needed. More to come.
