Megan Brower Megan’s Journey

First post: Dec 4, 2018 Latest post: Feb 19, 2021

I am Megan Brower.  I am married to Christian and together we have  Charlotte (6 years old) and Jonah (4 years old), the joys of our lives. Christian is the student ministries pastor at New Hope Community Church, and I spend my days caring for and loving on my kiddos in Traverse City, MI. I am currently fighting breast cancer and hope to use this site to keep you updated and aware of our current prayer requests. Thank you so much for your prayers and support to our family! Here is my quick story...

I was originally diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma in early June of 2017. I found a lump while nursing my new baby Jonah, who was just three months old at the time. At diagnosis I was staged at IIIC, because the cancer was found in the breast and lymph nodes, but not elsewhere in the body. This came as a shock to us as I have zero family history of breast cancer and practically zero risk factors. Over the next five months I underwent chemotherapy, then had surgery to remove the tumor and lymph nodes, and then underwent 6 weeks of radiation. In April 2018, I was done! My husband and I celebrated with a trip out west and me running a half marathon one year and one day after my diagnosis.

Then, on July 2, 2018 I called my doctor to report headaches that were worsening. I was called in for an MRI that day,  where they found a mass on my right frontal cortex of my brain, believed to be the breast cancer spread to the brain. The brain was swollen, so I stayed in the hospital until my craniotomy on July 6. I then underwent radiation therapy to the brain cavity where the tumor was and another small spot that was found. I am now a stage IV cancer patient. In October 2018 we found 2 more small spots in the brain that had grown from previous imaging. I was able to avoid surgery at that time, but had 2 additional radiation treatments. In May of 2018 I began having left leg weakness, which was believed to be from dead tissue from the previous radiation treatments in my motor cortex. After several MRIs, it was discovered that it was actually regrowth of one of the cancerous lesions in the brain and I had an awake craniotomy at University of Michigan in December 2019 to remove the tumor. I underwent more radiation to destroy any remaining cancer cells. I have continued to have clear PET scans, showing no cancer elsewhere in my body. Praise God! I am now followed on a regular basis with MRIs of my brain and PET scans of my body.

Thank you so much for your prayers and support of our family and me! We are forever grateful and trusting of God that He has a plan and purpose for the struggle He has allowed in our lives. He is good and He is sovereign! We are praying for healing and believing He is a God who makes the sick well! Thank you for joining us!
