Here we go again!! Hard to believe I am back writing "Maura's Story" for the 2nd time! As some of you know, I was recently diagnosed with breast cancer for the second time.  For those just finding out via this site, my apologies, but as you can imagine the last few weeks have been a whirlwind. This is a completely new case and NOT a re-occurrence of the cancer I was treated for in August 2008. After lots of doctor appointments, a ton of tests and an endless amount of tears, I believe we have a plan and are ready to attack this again! First and foremost, all tests to date show NO sign of spreading outside my breast, so this is the BEST news possible!! Second, I will have surgery in the next few weeks (waiting for the exact date and will post as soon as I know) to perform a unilateral mastectomy on my left breast, followed by radiation and chemo. A final decision about chemo will be made post surgery but as of right now it is likely.  Third, six months post radiation, in approximately September 2017, I will have a unilateral mastectomy on the right side with bi-lateral reconstruction.  Even as I type this I am shaking my head that this is my reality!! However, the love and support I have received to date reminds me how blessed I am even during this difficult time and for that I am so thankful and know this is just another bump in the road!! I ask for your continued support and prayers in the weeks and months ahead!!
