Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Hopefully, I am setting this up correctly! Thank you for visiting.

Matt had a cardiac arrest Monday morning, March 26, at approximately 7:30 am. He was on a substitute teaching job for 2nd grade at Mary Reilly Elementary. He was talking about the weekend with the office manager and collapsed sudennly with no warning. They started cpr and the school nurse shocked him and regained a pulse.  He was was transported quickly to the hospital where he remains in icu.
His current status is critical. He is sedated as he is on a ventilator to supplement his breathing. He does wake when he is off sedation. His responses are slow - seems to recognize my voice.  He was seen by neurology last night and will receive an MRI today. We will have more information after that. He does have “slight” pneumonia so is being treated for that. There does not appear to be any major damage to his heart from the initial testing, and when he is off sedation he is quite strong physically.  Any further testing on the heart remains in the future. Our biggest concern, among many, is his brain injury.
My sister, Marilyn, is here with us in Dallas, and our parents were able to visit him yesterday and this morning along with  our brother-in-law, Mike North. We are sharing with Matt all the well wishes he is receiving from around the world - college friends, colleagues the world over, former students, family, neighbors all. We are so appreciative and thank all of you.  Our primary goal is to honor Matt’s life and wishes. Please continue to pray for Matt for a quick resolution, healing and for the family.
I will update this as we have new news to report. If you would like to send him a message through the site, know that we will read it to him.

With appreciation and love, Carolyn Flinchum
