Matt’s CaringBridge post
Welcome and thank you for visiting our CaringBridge website. The family really appreciates your thoughts and support during this time!
On Sunday, April 24, 2022, Matt and Che were out riding their bicycles with a group of friends when Matt was hit head on by a car traveling possibly 40 miles an hour. He was thrown off his bicycle and has sustained multiple injuries.
The first priority for the surgeon that night was to fight for his life, which was in jeopardy several times due to hemorrhaging. They did remove the spleen but were not able to repair his bladder that had ruptured. Matt fought his way through the first night and was back in surgery Monday afternoon to better assess the injuries. They also repaired the bladder at that time.
Along with multiple abdominal injuries, he has a fracture in the C5 vertebrae that will require further surgery at some point to insert a metal plate. He also had a scalp laceration that required only stitches at this point, but further effects may show up when he is taken off sedation. Healing from those injuries and other issues that continue to arise will require at least two weeks in the hospital, and then several weeks of inpatient PT followed by outpatient PT. He may also be on kidney dialysis on an ongoing basis. Further updates in his condition will be shared as we receive them.
Che is applying for Family Medical Leave from her teaching position so she can care for Matt. However, even if she is granted that leave, it only protects her position, but provides no payment benefits.
Please be aware that clicking on the donate button on this website provides support for CaringBridge - a very worthy cause - but it does not go to the family. If you would like to bless the family during this time you can do so in the following ways: - Zelle directly to Che - Venmo, @Matt-n-Che
