Mary Ann Nelles

Mary Ann has always been physically active and dutiful in her responsibilities to her home, family and community. Remember, she ran the Twin Cities Marathon in 1983! In June of 2021, she noticed weakness in her right arm which continued to decline through months of exploring what could possibly be causing this condition. Mary (we in her family call her Mary; we’re lazy!) has other health conditions (Parkinson’s disease and Raynaud’s Disease) which we were hoping could explain her arm’s decline, but our hope was in vain. In April of 2022, Mary Ann was diagnosed with motor neuron disease, ALS or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig’s Disease.)

We are all quite amazed and saddened as there is no cure for ALS.

Mary Ann’s strength is declining, and her energy is low as her ALS is tough enough, but her Parkinson’s symptoms are also exacerbated by the ALS. She lives in her home in St. Michael, and I, Teri, her youngest sister, have been living with her since November of 2021. We are new to long-term care, but our siblings and friends are very helpful with things we need. We are trying to make Mary’s one-level home even more perfect for her through importing equipment from the ALS Association and other means. So far, we are doing well enough. Mary Ann is grateful for every one of her friends from work at Pillsbury over the years, SMHS 1961 Classmates, relatives and neighbors. You are true and treasured friends!

As we get going into the summer, we are planning to build a small network of folks who can join Mary on occasion for a lunch (we have Meals on Wheels delivered to her house Tuesday-Friday) and some light errands or chores, especially to help me get out of the house on a regular basis a few times a week. She is not up for long visits or more than a couple of people visiting at a time. Please contact me or someone in the family via a message here or on my phone (307-431-1954) if you want to visit.  Beyond this, cards, calls and prayers are the greatest!

We want to use this website for us to keep in touch with Mary Ann’s many friends and extended family, and for you to keep in touch with Mary Ann. Please pray for her and for her caretakers, for strength of spirit, patience, and fortitude (and all the other gifts of the Spirit), and for a reduction in her pain level. There is no known cause for Mary Ann to have any of her ailments. We ask that you keep us all in prayer and good thoughts now and in the months to come. Blessings to you and yours. Keep ALS research in your intentions as well. Thank you so much!
