August 31 , 2017 was a day that changed many people's life especially those who know and love Marty Horn. Despite being 54, Marty was determined to learn to surf and had started taking lessons at Carolina Beach. Eager to begin his day, Marty woke up at 6am to prepare for his second surfing lesson. Having arrived early for his lesson, Marty decided to go for a run on the beach and enjoy the beautiful sunrise. Marty’s lesson started at 9:00 am and within 15 minutes, his life changed forever. While surfing in waist deep water, Marty went into a wave and fell off the board hitting a sandbar. The impact immediately fractured Marty’s C3 thru T3 vertebrae. Marty was immediately taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington. His three children (Samantha, Pearce, and Zoey) were notified and immediately arrived to love and support him. Marty’s mother and five siblings have flown in from Oklahoma and Texas to provide their support for him and his children . On September 5, 2017, Marty had surgery to stabilize his neck but unfortunately his paralysis appears permanent. However, Marty and his family have faith, and know miracles happen. Prayer, love, support, and positive energy are sustaining Marty and his family during this difficult journey. Although Marty has no immediate family in Wilmington, we have been so humbled by all the support of his friends here that have become like family. His brothers and sisters are taking turns being here, as well as, his extended family. It is amazing to see this grace and beauty in the midst of such pain and sorrow. Please continue to keep Marty and his family in your thoughts and prayers.
We are now at the Shepherd Center in Atlanta, Georgia for the rehabilitation process of this journey.
We noticed some people have given tributes, which those funds go directly to Caring Bridges website. We are very thankful for this blog to share Dad's journey, but we are concerned that people think these funds are going directly to my dad. Therefore, in order to clarify funds we have opened a Go Fund account as well as a help hope live and a PayPal for those who are more comfortable with 100% of funds going directly to him.
The Help Hope Live goes directly towards the medical bills
https://helphopelive.org/campaign/13376The GoFundMe is ensuring that Pearce, Zoey and I still have all of the opportunities dad has dreamed of us having such as finishing our college courses
https://www.gofundme.com/4ji3tgoPayPal is a private email so 100% of the funds going to him miles4marty@gmail.com
Thank you for those who brought this to our attention and your love and prayers are sustaining us right now.
