Mark Wells Mark D Wells

My name is Katharine and my prior military husband and I are having a rough time this year. Actually, a rough couple of years. Last year was possibly the worst year my family had seen since 2010 (when my 8 year old son suffered a spinal cord injury). Last year my truck, that I had driven for 11 years, went up in flames (yes it was a ford). My husband had just lost his job of 10 years thanks to covid. Just a couple months later my son's 10 year old service dog had to be put down due to a hip injury. This is after my identity was stolen and our bank account emptied forcing us into a bankruptcy. A year that bad ended with a bang. On New Year's eve my husband went to check the propane levels before the snow came. He fell in our backyard breaking his tibia bone just above his ankle leaving it displaced. My husband has an amazing job that allows him to work from home so we are able to keep our health insurance and pay most of our home bills. Groceries are few and far between but my 17 year old daughter has gone to work to help out. I only wish I could get a job and contribute. Unfortunately, I was injured while working as a paramedic 10 year's ago and am on disability now for chronic regional pain syndrome (cprsd). I'm having trouble trying to care for my disabled son and now injured husband. We have insurance but they won't pay anything until we meet the deductible of $1000. The new insurances are rigged. We are self pay until we meet this deductible. Upon examining our policy I found that almost all medical services are exempt from the deductible. This means that the orthopedic doctor my husband saw billed us $600 and the insurance only paid $82, applying only $100 towards the deductible. The bones in his leg are not touching and will never heal until it is set which we are being told can only happen with surgery. The hospital will not even schedule the surgery until we pay this deductible. The doctor will not even cast it until it is set. As a paramedic I am embarrassed and disgraced at what our medical system has become. What happened to patient care and compassion. And lest we forget, where is that "do no harm"? They seem to be doing plenty of harm looking for a dollar. To top off all these events the air conditioning in our home decided it didn't want to work this year.
