In late November 2020, while undergoing tests for shortness of breath and a persistent cough, a CT scan indicated a mass in Lynn's lung and malignant cells in fluid drained from around her lungs. Shortly after, she had a biopsy of the mass which caused her lung to collapse and landed her in the hospital. The blessing of the situation was that being hospitalized allowed the remainder of the diagnostic testing to be completed very quickly. It was determined that she has adenocarcinoma lung cancer - also known as non-small cell lung cancer (nsclc) with an EGFR mutation. Unfortunately at that time it was also found that she had significant spread throughout her thoracic cavity.
Beginning January 1st 2021, Lynn started taking a drug named Tagrisso as a first line of treatment. Tagrisso is an oral targeted therapy that specifically targets the EGFR mutation. The next two PET scans showed that the medication was shrinking the main tumor as well as reducing the various areas initially observed at the time of diagnosis.
Her next PET scan was mid October, and unfortunately it was determined that the Tagrisso was not making any additional progress toward fighting the disease. The next line of treatment planned is four rounds of Chemotherapy. Her first infusion is scheduled for October 29th, 2021 and all future updates from this point forward will be in the Journal entries.
