Five years ago dad was diagnosed with vascular dementia. He moved to Edgewood Vista/Memory Care in Brookings in May 2014. He has been physically healthy until recently. He was hospitalized for 3 weeks over Christmas to help stabilize his medications and he will begin receiving hospice care this week to help improve his quality of life. Dad's doctor says that he is in the end stage of dementia and has congestive heart failure and this is why he spends most of his time sleeping now. Hospice will help with daily care and hygiene and assist him with eating. They will offer additional supports as his health continues to decline. Dad has a difficult time with conversation-the words just don't come to him. But he still recognizes us which always warms our hearts.
