Welcome to Lucas Kramer's CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

Lucas Kramer, 18, spent the summer as an intern at Google in Mountain View, California. Lucas is a brilliant young man and one of the youngest students to study at the University of Minnesota –– at age 11!! He completed his undergraduate degree (BS in computer science), his master's degree in Electrical Engineering, and entered the doctoral program at the U of M, all by the age of 15.

On August 16, 2018, while riding his bicycle to work at Google, Lucas was involved in a one-vehicle accident with a truck. The truck was traveling at 45 mph in the bike lane when it struck him. Lucas sustained massive traumatic injuries to his face and body and has undergone emergency surgeries at Stanford Medical Center.

While accidents involving a vehicle and a bicyclist are tragically often fatal, Lucas survived. Thanks Be To God! Because he was wearing his bike helmet (which undoubtedly saved his life), his Beautiful Mind was spared! However, Lucas faces a long road to recovery. Lucas is dealing with memory loss (not surprisingly), but he is conscious and responsive. However, doctors say Lucas will likely need $50,000 of additional surgeries. And then there will be months and months of long-term rehabilitation, therapy, and ongoing care.

Here is his parents' initial report on the day of the accident:
”We are at the Stanford trauma center in Palo Alto, California waiting for Lucas to get out of surgery. Please pray for Lucas. He was in a horrible bike accident, hit by a truck going 45mph in the bike lane. We don't know about his head yet. He has memory loss and doesn't remember what happened. Currently, he has been in surgery for over 4 hours with much more to go. He's very bruised up and we don't yet know the extent of all his injuries... but he has a broken arm, elbow, over 300+ stitches in his face, completely shattered jaw, top of his jaw is gone and they tried putting in a cadaver bone, lots of missing teeth, broken nose, many severed muscles on his face, skin grafts, chunks of his face are gone, severed lips -- all the way through, top and bottom. That is what we know so far.

“Thank you for praying. We will keep you updated." — Angie and Tim (Lucas's Mom and Dad)
