We were told in September of 2017 Dan had MDS and would only live about a year. He has genetic mutations that makes his disease fatal sooner than the already incurable MDS. Sometimes MDS is called "pre-leukemia," since it will eventually become leukemia. We sought a 2nd opinion at Mayo Clinic. Same diagnosis. We felt hopeless.💔 Dan was told by two different doctors to live his life and have his "affairs in order" (they really said that).
We found a MDS Clinical Trial in Cleveland, Ohio and Dan was accepted into their program in February 2018. Hope.❤ It meant a lot of flights to Cleveland and generous airline mile donations from friends and neighbors. It also meant we relied on friends and neighbors to help us with mail, snow removal, pets and support. Facebook Friends and relatives stepped up and kept Kathi from feeling alone during this stressful time. But we had hope. The trial medicine worked well enough to get Dan healthy enough for a bone marrow transplant by a non-related donor! Hope. ❤ What a beautiful word. We very much appreciate your support and words of hope, love and encouragement. Faith. ❤ We are grateful beyond words. Thank you for being here for us as Dan now undergoes a bone marrow transplant to hopefully cure his disease. We were told it will take a year before he feels better, but... we are hopeful, have faith, and feel loved. Thank you.
