Welcome to our CaringBridge site. We've created it to keep friends and family updated. We appreciate your prayers, support, words of hope and encouragement. It's been a rough year.
We flew to Atlanta to visit my Aunt Tammy, Moms youngest sister in April 2016. Two days later she became very sick so we called 911. They admitted her to the hospital thinking she had sepsis. Her temp was 103.5, oxygen level of 81, couldn't stand and was pretty unresponsive. They ruled out stroke right away thank God. She ended up being in the hospital for 39 days. During that time she coded (code blue) and went to ICU. After that she started taking on fluids so they sent her back to ICU again. Using dialysis they took 43 liters of fluid off her body. She was in really bad shape. Finally they stabilized her, got her off of oxygen and sent her to a rehab center in Georgia to get stronger. She was in rehab for 43 days before she was strong enough to fly home mid July. The entire time all of this was going on we knew that she had a fractured, dislocated and crumbling foot (Charcot foot) from diabetes. She had been wearing a boot and walking with a walker or using a wheel chair. The doctors told her that she needed reconstructive foot surgery right away or she could lose her foot. She wanted to have surgery in Michigan so we found a top notch surgeon at Beaumont, Dr. Paul Fortin. We waited a long time to see him. Ultimately she had major foot surgery on September 21st. From the hospital she went back into rehab for 54 days to help her get stronger and learn to use one foot when transferring, etc. It's been a long road. Today is December 13th and she's on cast number 5. We're not sure when she'll walk again at this point. She sees the surgeon again January 19th. Her Christmas wish was to walk again. Unfortunately that's going to be a while longer.
