Welcome to Leyla's CaringBridge website.  Leyla, Evie and I appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Please know that this is a location to keep everyone updated on a regular basis, but that we are very receptive to calls and texts as well.

Leyla was diagnosed with gastric cancer on July 18, 2022.  After a hospitalization for anemia and after many scans and lab studies it has been determined that the cancer has spread to many other places within her body.  The predominant area, and the genesis of the cancer, is in her stomach, but there is also cancer in her liver, lung, hip, pelvis and lymph system.  Leyla has begun treatment for this cancer with chemotherapy and the first of twelve rounds was done on August 9th.  The side effects were minimal for this round, and for that we are very grateful.  The chemotherapy infusions will be every two weeks for a total of twenty-four weeks.  Leyla also had a port placed in her upper right chest.  The port can be used for the chemotherapy, blood draws, but most importantly TPN.  The tumor in the stomach has partially blocked the pathway from her stomach to her intestines, which makes it very hard for her to get much nutrition by actually eating.  The TPN runs 24-hours per day and has allowed her to at least maintain her weight since it has been started.  Lastly, Leyla is having issues with anemia.  She is once again getting very close to needing a blood transfusion to rectify this, and the lab results from this next Monday's testing will dictate when that might be.

Leyla has been incredibly strong and brave throughout this time.  A near endless amount of needles, imaging, doctor's visits and a hospitalization and yet she still has that beautiful smile that we all know and love her for.  Many of those smiles and happy tears have come from the kindness and graciousness of friends and family.  The beautiful flowers and notes, phone calls and texts and visits have been so important, and we must add are healing.  Leyla, Evie and I are more than humbled and thankful for the outpouring of love and care.  We have some wonderful people in our lives.

So, we will continue to update Leyla's condition through this wonderful site.  Although this may sound strange, many days are just normal - a very much new normal, but regardless another day.  To a degree you can become galvanized to the shock of such a change in your life.  A normal day now would have been a shocking day a month ago.  Maybe it is a compensatory mechanism?

We cannot put into words how much we appreciate the outpouring of love and support.  Thank you.
