Sucker Punched on Halloween by Laurie Gathje — 1 hour ago
Well, 20 years and 11 months of being cancer free...has been shattered! 😢 I had a bruise on my right breast about the size of a pencil eraser. While getting ready for bed on Oct. 30th, I noticed that bruise was now red, not yellow like bruises should be. I felt over there and sure enough there was a lump. I sent 2 frantic messages to my drs, one an oncologist. Steve and I were leaving for Hawaii in 2 days and I needed to know what this was, even though my gut told me it was not good.
There was a flurry of action on Halloween, ultrasound that was followed up by a needle core biopsy and a mammogram. The Dr. was pretty sure it was cancer and BOOM...yep...a woman whose breasts were removed almost 21 years ago now has breast cancer again!
It's Triple negative and 2 oncologists told me that it's manageable, treatable, and curable! SO...that being said, I had a port put in on 11/22 and it went very well.
Monday, 11/25, I will have a full body PET scan to be sure we don't have any other cancer demons elsewhere in my body. PRAYING big time that is a clean scan. My chemo will be weekly for 12 weeks to begin with. The goal is to shrink the tumor and then do surgical removal and possible radiation. Hoping no lymph nodes are involved as well, as I have lymphedema in my left arm already and really prefer a normal right arm! 😀
So, my mantra 20+ years ago was this: I believe in the power of prayer! I believe in the power of modern medicine (thank goodness for 20 years of research!!) and, I believe in the power of a positive attitude!
This go round I'm adding this: "Rosie the Riveter move over cuz Laurie the WARRIOR is taking over!!"
I have one grandchild and another due in December. Adult kids too of course. Let's not forget Steve...he's going to be by my side all the way! I have NEW reasons to continue living life to the fullest! I GOT THIS! WE GOT THIS! I intend to kick cancer's ass to the curb once again and get another 20 years of joy! It's just a bump in the road!
I posted pictures of the great welcome home that the adult kids did while Steve and I were in Hawaii for 2 weeks! My team is larger, stronger, and together WE GOT THIS!!! JOIN THE TEAM! It's gonna be a ride!
