On Tuesday, February 8th, Lara was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia, AML. This is a type of cancer in which the bone marrow makes a large number of abnormal cells. The journey to Lara’s diagnosis began in December with a painful gum infection and severe fatigue. In January, a routine visit to Lara’s general practitioner for her annual physical resulted in blood tests which revealed several markers that were out of range. Hemoglobin low, red blood cells low, platelets low, white blood cells high. As her hemoglobin continued to decrease to less than 7.0, a blood transfusion was required on February 3 and 8 more blood tests were ordered. On February 7, Lara was admitted to Kaiser – Sand Canyon, and her hematologist indicated there was a high probability of leukemia based on her physical exam (gums/red spots) and symptoms, such as fatigue, dizziness, infections. A bone marrow biopsy was performed, and results of the biopsy confirmed a diagnosis of leukemia, type AML.
Chemotherapy was initiated immediately on Feb 8. In ten days, Lara will have more details about her specific AML diagnosis. We will provide an update when the details are available.
This is Lara’s journey, Jim’s journey, Larissa’s journey and Kat’s journey. They are walking down this road together, hand in hand, and Jesus is holding the other hand. If you know Lara, you know that her faith is as FIERCE as her love for family and friends, and as FIERCE as her conviction and mindset. She walks down this path willingly, with the great joy and confidence knowing that God has a plan, and that in Him, she places her trust completely.
