Kurt was diagnosed with idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy 5 years ago in 2011.  Under his cardiologist's treatment, he had initially done well and showed improvement, however, over the past year his heart function has declined to the point were he will now require a heart transplant.  To act as a "bridge to transplant", Kurt will have a heart pump or LVAD (Left Ventricular Assist Device) placed through a surgical procedure on December 20th, 2016.  As he recovers from this surgery,  he will then be placed on a heart transplant list, and based on the blessing of a donor, will hopefully receive a new heart within the next year or so.
