Welcome to Kurt's CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one private place.  Please respect that we are updating here, instead of Facebook, to keep Kurt's privacy.  We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement.  After work on Friday, September 23, 2016, Kurt was on his way home and heading up the overpass to enter 580 Eastbound, on his motorcycle, when he was involved in an accident.  We do not have a police report yet, but the medics "heard" that he was clipped or cut off.  That's all we know.  More importantly, he is alive and well and the helmet apparently saved his life!  He was taken to Valley Care first and then transferred to the ICU trauma unit at Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley.  Lori and Lynn were finally able to see him about 10:30pm last night and he was resting and in good care, so we left about 1:30am.  He has 7 broken ribs and an "air pocket with some blood" between his lungs and his rib cage, so they are going to put in a tube to drain it.  Kurt was given an epidural drip last night that should numb the pain to help him breathe easier.  He is also on oxygen because it hurts to breathe.  Aside from the ribs, he has several road rash scrapes on his knees and shoulders and hands, but overall his is very fortunate!  We welcome your notes of encouragement here instead of texting Lori, so she can focus on his care and her own much needed rest as well.  Kurt's phone was destroyed, so please refrain from texting or calling Kurt until we can get it replaced and he is well enough to use it.  While Kurt is in ICU, there are no visitors allowed at this time.  We expect him to be released from ICU in a day or two, and will let you know when that happens.  Until then, please leave your well wishes on this site and Lori will be happy to read them to him at the appropriate time.  He is well sedated and very well cared for in the ICU.  Thank you all in advance for using this site to keep in touch, yet stay as updated and as current as Lori can make it for you all.    If you have any questions, please feel free to post them here and we will give you the best answer we are able, as soon as we are able.  If you have friends that you feel should have access to this site, please send a message and we would be happy to send them the link.
