Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

Kim is in the ICU at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla after having a bike accident yesterday morning.  I was with her when she went down and while I believe she was unconscious at first, within seconds she woke up and was lucid, remembered what happened, knew where she was, could tell me where it hurt, apologized (just like Kim) for ruining our bike outing, etc.  But by the time the paramedics arrived, she was becoming more disoriented, had forgotten where she was or how she got there and then she had a seizure while in transport to the ER.  Because of her progressive altered mental status however they decided to sedate her, intubate her and put a intracranial monitor in her head (a bolt, as they say) to watch the pressure in her brain.  Fortunately that pressure has been normal as is her head CT scan except for some mild subdural bleeding. Assuming no new problems, I understand they will get another CT scan this morning and begin talk about taking her off of sedation and waking her up. Her pelvic fracture is not a problem at the moment, no bleeding which is the big issue at first, but she may still require surgery for that after her brain is stablized - I have not seen the orthopedic surgeon yet.

I am managing but it is really hard.  I will post updates here as appropriate.  Please keep Kim in your thoughts and prayers.  thanks.  rick
