My Story I thought it was menopause, quarantining with middle schoolers doing on line school, stress. This past year I’ve been fatigued and having a hard time getting the usual things done. Recently on 2 occasions I had short lived fevers after working a 24hr shift.
On my pre-summer camp physical, I mentioned my symptoms. I had routine yearly labs drawn. My blood count was very abnormal with pancytopenia. I was sent to hematology who did a lot of labs and a bone marrow biopsy.
We were shocked when the results came back Multiple Myeloma Stage 3 (cancer of the plasma cells). Luckily Duke is a speciality center for cancer, and has an awesome MM team. This cancer has a lot of new therapies and is treatable though not considered curable (yet).
Feel free to follow along on our journey. I probably will include some lab numbers or medical jargon since so many of my friends and family are health care workers and we love data.
