Welcome to our CaringBridge website for Kerry Martens. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.
Our friend and brother, Kerry Martens has always been full of life, loves people, is generous and helpful. He has a very caring heart and there is nothing he wouldn't do for those he knows and loves. From childhood into adulthood he has loved sports and excelled at them. Kerry has always been a hard worker, taking pride in every job he has had. His success in his jobs has been largely due to his gift of relating well to people.
Things changed on January 24th, 2012, his 44th birthday of all days, when he experienced a series of 5 grand mal seizures! After being referred to a neurologist and going through a gamut of tests in Edmonton where he was living, he was left with no clear diagnosis as to the source of these seizures. He moved back to Manitoba to be closer to family where he experienced more seizures. He saw another neurologist who repeated all the tests he had already done and some additional ones, yet they still couldn't find a reason for the seizures.
Throughout the last nearly 6 years Kerry has not been well enough to work, which has been devastating for him. A 2-year fight for insurance failed, leaving him to depend solely on partial disability. He experiences frequent migraines, dizziness, and fatigue which can be brought on by any exertion, bright lights, loud noise, and bending down.
The Canadian medical system has been unable to help Kerry find a diagnosis, having exhausted all options available here. In the hope of a better quality of life for Kerry, family and friends are supporting an effort to have Kerry travel to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. to see specialized physicians. The Mayo Clinic has recently received an award for being the top neurological treatment centre in North America, and we are hopeful they will be able to help Kerry.
Kerry will be undergoing tests and consultations at the Mayo Clinic starting Monday, February 5, 2018 and the days that follow.
