Life gives us surprises and here is a big one. The ever athletic, energetic, ebullient Ken surprised us with a heart attack and cardiac arrest Saturday (11/11) after Luanne and he kayaked and warmed up in the hot tub. Luanne’s quick and strong CPR revived him, followed by excellent EMT care, stabilization in the Salt Spring hospital, and transport to British Columbia’s best cardiac care unit in Victoria.
What we know: Ken started with a very healthy (and happy)heart. Ken prefers privacy about health and body things, so we seek a balance that respects that and yet connects him and Luanne to the gloriously vast network of caring characters who love this dynamic duo.
Also what we know: The clot in the right coronary artery caused moderate to severe damage to the right ventricle. An angioplasty placed a stent, and treatment progressed with 24 hours of cooling and sedating his body for optimal healing. Only when the sedation and other supports are removed can his global brain health be assessed.
We don’t know how his heart muscle will heal or if any lapse in oxygenation damaged his brain. Those reports will come later as we all continue to love this man back to health. Luanne remains his remarkable and loving anchor, though her healthy heart aches.
