In October 2018, I was diagnosed with a form of throat cancer caused by the HPV virus. It’s at the base of my left tongue and has been causing me increasing pain for over a year. My ENT doctor's in Austin ultimately referred me to the specialists at MD Anderson in Houston, and thru a battery of tests they’ve confirmed the tumor as squamous cell carcinoma. To complicate things a bit - the cancer was also found in multiple lymph nodes in my neck, as well as in my upper spine and pelvis. So technically speaking it’s "metastasized".
However, the team at MD Anderson has continued to tell me that my form of cancer has a high success rate of being treated/cured thru radiation and chemo, so I shouldn’t get too hung up on the fact that it’s gone beyond the head and neck. It makes treatment a little longer and a little more complex, but the survivor rate is still strong despite metastization. So I’m staying confident - and you should as well!
My treatment plan started in November with high intensity radiation to the spine and pelvis spots over 3 successive days at MD Anderson. Other than some bone pain (solved with some steroids), it went well. Just after Thanksgiving, I started my chemotherapy phase here in Austin.
