This past Wednesday, Aug 9th, Kathy was at St John's Hospital in Maplewood for her fairly routine outpatient kidney stone surgery. As most of you know, Kathy has suffered for years with kidney stone issues, so in our eyes this was just another day for Kathy. Her best friend Jean took her for the procedure, and as always they laughed and joked right up to them taking Kathy into surgery. The medical team had just sedated her and intubated her when Kathy started having unexpected issues. Our understanding (but not even the doctors are exactly sure) is that Kathy went into a respiratory arrest which then led into a full cardiac arrest. We lost Kathy for a full 20 minutes, but the medical team was able to get her heart started and eventually they were able to stabilize her. She was hooked up to life support, multiple other machines and many iv's and medications. We honestly were numb and didn't know what to think. Dr. Murphy who is Kathy's ICU doctor briefly came to talk to us about what had just happened. He simply stated her condition is guarded and very very critical. He has told us several times now that it's a miracle Kathy is still with us, and that "somebody was DEFINITELY looking out for her." Being we had just lost our Mom 2 weeks ago it was clear who that guardian angel was.
