A typical Sunday. Go to church, then pick our hiking trail. On April 24, 2016 we chose a 3.5 mile hike at Brown County State Park- we decided to go a little lighter since Kat said she was a little tired and feeling a bit under the weather. After 2 miles she is breathing heavy and feeling extremely fatigued. The last mile was tough. I insisted on going to the doctor on Monday. Blood test shows elevated white cells, low platelets and red blood cells. Bone marrow biopsy on Wednesday April 27, diagnosed on Friday with leukemia.
The next Monday, 8 days later, here we are in the IU Health Simon Cancer Center ready to begin chemotherapy for Acute Undifferentiated Leukemia (similar to AML- Acute Myeloid Leukemia).
Chemotherapy began May 3, 2016. Kat is very very upbeat and positive- ready to move forward and beat this.
What a life-changer. Healthy one minute, battling leukemia the next. This proves what we have been saying- appreciate every minute of every day.
Prayers, pictures, words of inspiration, funny stories- anything to keep this beautiful woman positive to win this battle. Kat is honestly the most positive, upbeat individual I have ever known. She is always giving to others and bringing a smile to everyone around her.
Kat is my angel- and we will beat this. Dan
[UPDATE] May 11, 2016
Thank you so much to everyone for the outpouring of love and support! Mom and Dan and I read everything here, and each of you that have visited, posted, or commented have helped to give her strength. It means the world to us. It's a long journey ahead still, but we're giving it our all! For those of you looking for ways to help, the large donation buttons you may see on the site are for donations to CaringBride. These are welcome, but they only go to the CaringBridge charity itself to support its efforts to keep its service up and running. If you're looking for a way to help us directly in the battle against leukemia, please consider joining the national bone marrow registry. You can find information at https://bethematch.org/support-the-cause/donate-bone-marrow/join-the-marrow-registry/
). The more people that join, the more people like my mom have a chance at finding a match and kicking leukemia! -Luke
