Welcome to Kari's CaringBridge website. Mike, Kari's husband, is writing the journal and posting pictures. As most of you know, about 5 years ago, Kari was diagnosed with Stage 2 triple negative breast cancer. We got married almost immediately thereafter.
For a while, she successfully fought the disease. She kept working; turns out she looks great bald. The cancer returned about two years later.
Kari entered a broad study to check the efficacy of genetically modified antibodies on her type of cancer. The experimental drug kept the cancer at bay for a full year. After some time, it appeared to spread to a few lymph nodes and she went back on standard chemotherapy.
Unfortunately, the cancer spread faster than the chemo could hold it back and tumors spread to her shoulder, her lungs, and brain. She is now listed as late stage (terminal) cancer. We made the difficult decision to stop the chemotherapy and focus on comfortably spending her remaining time at home, surrounded by family and friends.
