Kari has been diagnosed with an Oropharyngeal (refers to the middle part of the throat) cancer called Squamous Cell Carcinoma. This site is a way for Kari's family and friends to organize our efforts to support Kari, Jay and Sasha as they navigate the coming months of treatment and recovery.
The good news is that this is a highly-curable form of oral cancer. Treatment will likely involve radiation and a targeted form of chemotherapy. The other good news is that Kari has a great group of supporters- people from all parts of her life who love and admire her, and who want to help.
Please take a look at the Planner section of this site to volunteer to assist Kari on particular days with specific tasks. Kari and I will add things to the planner as she finds out more about the details of her treatment.
In general, the kinds of things Kari and her family will find helpful include:
- Preparing dinners for Kari, Jay and Sasha (They really love pasta dishes and soup. Stick to beef, chicken, tofu and veggies- no pork or seafood, please. Sasha probably won't want to eat it if its spicy or mushroomy!) - Grocery Shopping - Gardening/weeding - Rides to and from the Seattle ferry from home on Vashon - Rides from the ferry dock to Virginia Mason and back to the ferry dock for treatments/appointments on Seattle-side. Seattle people who want to make dinners, coordinate getting food to Kari when she is in town for her to take on the ferry home) - People to visit with after radiation (perhaps in coordination with rides to and from ferry on either side) - Housecleaning (doing laundry, dishes, vacuuming, cleaning bathrooms) - Pip walks/runs - Help with Sasha (inviting her on playdates, getting her back and forth to activities like Girl Scouts, swimming, music and hip hop classes).
