On a routine doctor's visit they heard a heart murmur a year ago. We saw kalebs regular pediatrician for a follow up and he said was a functioning heart murmur and not to worry. This past October we took Kaleb in for a visit due to some constipation, and again they heard a heart murmur. They wanted to have an EKG just to see what was going on but without any known issues our insurance didn't approve it. So we were sent to pediatric cardiologist in Des Moines. Kaleb had an x-ray, EKG and echo cardiogram done and we met with the cardiologist. Our world was turned upside down. Kaleb has a narrowing spot in his aortic artery and would need surgery in the next four weeks probably. Its called aortic coarctation. We we're referred to a pediatric heart surgeon at Iowa heart the following week for a CT scan. When we met with the surgeon he said the narrowing was pretty severe and surgery was scheduled for a little over a week later. Tonight we sit in our hotel across from Mercy hospital, while dreading tomorrow morning when Kaleb will have his surgery.
