Many of you know that my mom went into Regions Hospital for a hernia repair on her abdomen on Monday, April 3rd. About six years ago she had a serious medical situation with colitis that resulted in needing an ileostomy.  She's had issues with hernias developing in the abdomen and they have caused issues with the ileostomy and her digestive tract. We knew that this surgery and hernia repair was going to be complex.

We are currently on week 6 of her medical stay in the hospital. She has had many complications involving infection, open wounds, and abdominal fistulas which have resulted in multiple unexpected surgeries. At this time, things seem to be headed in the right direction. The priorities for her care are infection control and wound care. As a result of the surgeries she has had, and the damage the internal leakage has done to her skin, her incisions are open and need to heal from the inside out.

Once her medical needs are under control and can be managed she will be moving to a transitional care facility.  We're not sure when this will be but since she'll continue to have medical needs and will require rehab after being in a hospital bed this long, this next step will likely last a couple of months. The recovery period for what she has going on is going to take most of the next year. At that time she will need another surgery to "put things back together again" - whatever that means...

Thank you all for your phone calls, prayers, and positive thoughts. Please send mom your greetings through the guest book and we will be sure to pass them along. Visitors are welcome and encouraged as I'm sure you can imagine, this ordeal is quite depressing. She is on the 11th floor of the South Tower- room 11403.

I'll post updates as there is news to share. Hopefully it will be GOOD NEWS!

With love and hope,

Kelly
