June 12-17, Dad and Mom were blessed with a beautiful week of visiting Dad's sisters and families, as well as Mom's sister and family in FLA. 2 Days later, at a previously scheduled pulmonologist's appt., the nurse found a lump in Dad's throat. The CAT scan and biopsy that quickly followed delivered the shocking news - Dad has stage IV anaplastic thyroid cancer.
This cancer occurs in only 1 % of all thyroid cancers. There is no cure and it is a rapidly spreading cancer. Dad is blessed with a wonderfully caring team of doctors and nurses at Christian Hospital. He is, and has been, blessed with his loving family and friends supporting him throughout the years.
Dad will begin a regime of chemotherapy to hopefully slow down the growth of the cancer, giving us all a little more time to share our love and memories with him. He'll have 1 treatment a week for 3 weeks, and then 1 week off. The doctors will evaluate his ability to withstand the treatments, as well as their overall effectiveness on the cancer. His 1st treatment is Thurs., July 19th. Radiation may be used in conjunction with the chemo. This will be determined after the genetic testing of the biopsied tissue is complete.
