Joyce was diagnosed with breast cancer in June 2016. She had her tumor removed in November 2016 and has been receiving chemo treatments until February 2017. However, her treatments were stopped due to severe neuropathy pain setting in her feet. Due to her suppressed immune system she got shingles. And then hospitalized on February 24 due to her severe pain and numbness on her left side. She was in mercy hospital for almost 2 weeks until transferred to KU on March 6, 2017
