Welcome to the CaringBridge website for our dad, John. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. Hopefully we won't need it for long!

On May 6th, around noon, John was cutting the lawn.  He must have felt unwell, because he took a break and soon after went into cardiac arrest.  Faye, by the grace of God, happened to come into the garage to see him collapse and reacted swiftly and with purpose.  She assessed the situation, called 911 and started chest compressions until the first responders arrived.  Apparently, there is only a 7% survival rate in scenarios such as that one.  We credit Faye for using her nurse superpowers, and the quick arrival of the first responders for saving his life.

When the first responders arrived at the house, John had no heartbeat and was not breathing.  He was rushed to Thedacare Medical Center in Appleton where they were able to get a heartbeat and placed a breathing tube.  He was unresponsive, so was transferred to the ICU where they chose to put him in an induced coma to help preserve brain function and reduce stress on his system.  When he awoke, he was able to respond to commands and has been making strides cognitively, despite having been without oxygen for an unknown amount of time.

Over the course of days, we rode an emotional rollercoaster.  Good news followed by bad; fluid in his lungs followed by being told that he was getting stronger at an incredibly fast rate.  Memory and thinking issues, followed by clear thinking and cracking tons of bad jokes.  He's now fairly stable and focusing on getting as strong as he can before he faces open heart surgery on Tuesday.  He will have a quadruple bypass.  He is expected to be in the ICU for 1-3 days following surgery, then a few more days in another unit before discharge plans can be considered.

All those that have been praying, thank you!  Those of you that are just coming on the scene, thank you in advance for any prayers you can send our way.
