In June of 2015 John was diagnosed with a rare liver cancer called cholangiocarcinoma.

Last summer and into the fall he received chemotherapy in the hope the tumor would shrink enough that the cancerous portion of the liver could be removed. The surgery took place in mid-October 2015 and unfortunately the surgeon found additional tumors in what had previously been believed to be the healthy half of his liver, making surgical removal impossible.

Since then John has received palliative chemotherapy, first as a repeat of his original chemo protocol  & physician in St. Paul and currently from a new protocol & care team at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN.
